45,000 runners in the TCS Amsterdam Marathon raised over €137,000 for the VUmc Cancer Center Amsterdam (VUmc CCA). VUmc CCA will use this year’s proceeds to purchase a Vectra Polaris, which can detect the type of tumor and the best immunotherapy for treating it. It is expected that the Vectra Polaris will come into operation per January 2018. Including this year’s proceeds, the milestone of one million Euros has been passed by a margin over a period of six years.
Every year, around 45,000 runners from 127 different countries take part in the TCS Amsterdam Marathon, organised by Le Champion. Individual runners, corporate teams and partners are encouraged to support VUmc Cancer Center Amsterdam or to raise funds themselves. As charity partner, the research institute benefits from the proceeds of the Amsterdam Marathon.
Amit Kapur, Director and Head of TCS Benelux: “Giving back to the community has been a core focus of TCS. As part of the Tata Group, we have supported cancer research since 1941. By associating with the marathon, we also want to stimulate a healthy lifestyle with our employees, customers and partners. It’s fantastic that we can combine these two goals through the partnership between the TCS Amsterdam Marathon and the VUmc CCA.”
Jossie Rotman, Researcher at VUmc CCA: “It’s a huge challenge to run the half marathon myself, but in the end it’s the thought that you can do something for cancer research and hence help numerous patients that inspires you to complete the marathon”.
In the #TCSSuperheroes social media campaign, which revolves around the personal motivation of the participants in the TCS Amsterdam Marathon, researcher at VUmc Cancer Center Amsterdam and participant in the marathon Jossie Rotman gives her view.
Geert Kazemier, Director of the VUmc CCA Foundation: “The partnership with the TCS Amsterdam Marathon is extremely valuable to our research”. With the over 1 million Euros that has been raised since 2012, much progress has been made into cancer research regarding diagnosis and treatment of people with cancer. We are grateful to everyone who has helped to achieve this”.
