Chebet and Hailu shine at the TCS Amsterdam Marathon: two course record
21-10-2012During the 37th TCS Amsterdam Marathon both course records were wiped from the books. Wilson Chebet came in three seconds under the old record and set the clock at 2.05.41. Meseret Hailu beat the record by almost a minute to 2.21.09. Michel Butter crowned his form with a wonderful time of 2.09.58. Despite the somewhat disappointing weather, there has been some very hard running in Amsterdam.
The Olympic Stadium was ecstatic when Chebet came into the stadium. It wasn’t a given that he would beat Getu Feleke’s time (2010, 2.05.44). It didn’t work out last year, but now the 27-year-old Kenyan can leave the capital with a broad smile. “It was a tough race,” he said afterwards. “In some places I stood almost still due to the wind. Luckily I had good pacers around me.” Athletes’ manager Jos Hermens of Global Sports Communications indicated that 40 or 50 seconds were lost due to the stiff wind.
The race was decided in the final kilometres. After 35 km the leading group consisted of nine runners. Peter Kirui, one of the favourites, was the first to tear away from the group. After 39 km Chebet showed that he possessed the best legs and left the competition behind. The Ethiopian Bentayehu Assefa came second across the finish line in the Olympic Stadium after 2.06.22. Third was compatriot Abrha Gebretsadik who followed a second later. Feyisa Girma Bekele and Abraham also stayed under 2.07.
Michel Butter rises above himself
After the huge welcome for Chebet, the stadium exploded when Michel Butter came into the Olympic Stadium. The 27-year-old TDR athlete was hugely relieved, when he saw that he had run under 2.10. Particularly impressive were his last 7 kilometres, when the pacers had done their work and he accelerated the pace by himself. “I had to endure a lot and the last 2 kilometres were very heavy, I thought, this is going to be difficult. But I just did. I am very proud”, beamed a happy Butter. With this time Butter is now number three in the list of all-time Dutch greats. The next step towards the Dutch record was set this weekend.
Ronald Schroer also ran hard inAmsterdam. He ran a new personal best: 2.16.19. Rens Dekkers couldn’t improve on his personal best; he finished as the third Dutchman in 2.17.19.
Meseret Hailu rushes to course record
The party atmosphere at organiser Le Champion was even greater when Meseret Hailu crossed the finish line after 2.21.09. The second course record became a fact with an improvement of nearly a minute. Olympic champion Tiki Gelana’s friend and last year’s winner snatched the record. Getaneh Tessema’s training camp has been a great success again. After taking the world title at the half marathon, two weeks later the 22-year-old Ethiopian also wins the TCS Amsterdam Marathon. Her personal best was improved by no less than six minutes. The two friends talked together immediately after the match. Gelana joked that next year she will take on the challenge to grab back the record.
Caroline Kilel could not deliver her favourite role. After more than 31 km she had to discontinue the marathon. Hailu Enice Kirwa managed the last two kilometers. The Kenyan runner also ducked under the old course record: 2.21.41. Genet Getaneh was third (2.25.38).
Record number of Participants
The TCS Amsterdam Marathon broke more records. No less than 38,000 runners entered for the various distances (marathon, Mizuno Half Marathon, 8 km and children’s runs). That’s 5,000 more than a year earlier. Thereby the event has grown significantly. With 13,000 marathon runners, the TCS Amsterdam Marathon is the biggest marathon in theNetherlands and is fast becoming part of the largest marathons inEurope. With 15,000 registrations from abroad the TCS Amsterdam Marathon appears to be very popular internationally. With 82 nationalities, the atmosphere in and around the Olympic Stadium overwhelming.

Hi
We are a group of runners doing every year a marathon. This year we choose Amsterdam. And we enjoyed very much of it, great course, great atmosphere and great host city!
There is one point for which I hesitate to fully recommend you to friends. It is far too dense to run up to km 26, that is not fun any more!! Please organise the sectors better (they were all mixed up at the start)!! Make a break of 2-5 minutes between the sectors. That will take a bit more time but gives space to run.
We run bigger marathons than this, but this was by far the one with the least space for the runners. (New York e.g. is a luxury and even Berlin, sometimes also quite dense, is much better after km 5)
A break between sectors is a small organisational step – with a big effect!
Best regards
Markus
Totally agree with Markus. Great city, lovely people, but there are some problems with the course. In parts, it’s too narrow for the volume of runners, especially in the first 3-4km. Took me 45 seconds to walk round the first corner outside the stadium, and I was almost 2 minutes down against target by the 5km mark.
Had a great time nonetheless. Thanks, Amsterdam!
Leuk ! Ik wilde alleen maar om te reageren. Ik heb echt hield van je post. Houd omhoog het grote werk op http://www.tcsamsterdammarathon.nl . prachtig!
If you are looking for real cheap amoccmodations, check out hostels. Some of the hostels are budget hotels, so there are places were you can you’ll be able to get your own room rather than share one, but at a much lower price. Enjoy your travels.
That’s the best awnesr by far! Thanks for contributing.
One film about running from that era I relaly like is The Jericho Mile, about a guy who has a shot at making the Olympic team except he’s a lifer behind prison bars. It’s a little hokey, but I enjoy it nonetheless.
A mniute saved is a minute earned, and this saved hours!
We came from Sardinia, beautifull city and marathon, i also agree with Markus, we were all mixed up,i suppose to be in the third section between 3h and 3h 30 but i had so much slow traffic in front of me because they were from a slower section, i had to overtake so many thousands people and only after many km finally i got my peace, one moore important thing to do better next one is the transportation to stadium, terrible!!!!, we were close to airport and we couldn’t get to the stadium, they close many roads but nothing was organized for the runners, also the bus and tram drivers they didn’t n know much how to go to the stadium and with wich tram or bus, so many people they had to walk for few km.. hope it will better next time and hope tu run it again.. ciao ciao Amsterdam
DJ Fuji is talking about spfiiecc bad body habits. If you teach boxing and you have a guy who has always rolled his shoulder before he throws a hook, it’s hard to break the habit. He’s not talking about qualification or not qualifying, those things are simple. Body language is hard to fix, and that’s why he and Mehow harp so much about it. Like buying a drink for a girl isn’t a habit, it’s just something you do if you don’t know better, and there are spfiiecc situations where it is perfectly okay to buy a girl a drink. Since it’s a conscious choice, it’s not habitual, which involves unconscious repetition of an action. Babe Ruth sticking his tongue out before he threw a curveballl was a habit. Babe Ruth ordering Rib-eyes was not. Etc. Concerning audio and hypno trance, I’ve done undergrad work in psychology and know of no recognized use of that for treatment of any phobias. The most common treatment is immersion treatment, you just make someone do something they’re terrified of, called flooding in behavior psychology. More gradual immersion therapy can be used, but I’ve never found any NLP stuff useful either from a theoretical perspective, (which it ranks next to phrenology in scientific literature) or from a practical perspective. Want change? Go do something. You can use spfiiecc contraindication behavior if you want to eliminate a spfiiecc bad habit. E.g. if you play with your hands you can hook your thumb around your belt loop and then you can’t play with your hands. So thate2€™s why I wanna make sure that Ie2€™m doing the right things and skip trial and error process. You need to listen to DJ Fuji talk about the myth of the magic bullet and the myth of the perfect pick-up. He addresses both those things DIRECTLY in that same convention. THERE IS NO LEARNING IN PICK-UP APART FROM TRIAL AND ERROR!!!!! That’s like saying you want to learn how to fight but don’t want to spar. Or that you want to learn baseball without going out in field and actually catching a ball or batting at the plate. The theory is worthless apart from the experience. For you, you have wayyyy too much theory in your head and you’ll nut up when you go out because you’re going to get analysis paralysis. Go out, take your lumps, and when you hit a spfiiecc problem, *then* you need to check out what theories are out there about what might be going wrong. And when that happens, guess what? It’s trial-and-error. You’ll have to test out what theories work and which ones don’t.

The only thing I’m afraid of in Amsterdam is the inunlefce of muslims and the atmosphere of fear it could create (viz the murders of Theo Van Gogh and Pim Fortuyn (whose murderer had some sort of sick solidarity with muslims), and the execrable treatment of Ayaan Hirsi Ali). I would like to think that the Dutch treasure the liberty and tolerance that is embodied by Amsterdam, and are strong enough to fight any attacks from Sharia-tards and multiculti PC polizei. I fear that it is not.
